Calbourne

Calbourne is one of the most unspoilt villages on the Island and well worth a visit. There is a sloping green at its centre beside an ancient church which dates back to AD 826. A pretty row of houses known as Winkle Street looks on to a stream from where the village gets its name the Caul-Bourne where it used to power five mills to the north. At the entrance to Winkle Street is a lodge and drive leading to Westover House, a privately owned manor house which stands on a hill overlooking Calbourne.

To the west you will find Upper Calbourne Mill. It is open to the public and houses a machinery exhibition you can also see the six metre high water mill in action. There are lovely gardens to wander around and a cafe selling home baking. The Water Mill has established a reputation for itself as an eco pioneer. The estate is partly powered by wind turbines and renewable materials have been used to construct a showcase building.

Further along the road you will find Chessell Pottery. A thriving business where you can watch the pottery being made. There is also a shop and coffee shop at the Pottery.
