RYDE AREA RANGER

Funding for the Ryde Area Ranger project ran out in December 2004.

The aims of the project


The aims of the project included:

  • The improvement of the physical environment of Ryde;
  • Better management, access and use of open space within and on the periphery of Ryde for the benefit of all of Ryde’s residents;
  • The conservation and enhancement of the biodiversity and heritage amenity of open space and green space;
  • The stimulation of sustainable community involvement in green space and open space projects close to their home.
The location of the project within the Countryside Section was ideal because the project needed access to the vehicles and tools operated by the Ranger Service. It is far more effective to get into Ryde with volunteers from the local community, and undertake practical improvement works. Also, it is invaluable to have instant access to the information held by the ecology, ranger and tree teams.

The project was taken out of the office and into Ryde as often as possible. This was regularly achieved in the following way: -

  • Locate an area in Ryde in need of improvement;
  • Consult the local community, and if possible involve them in the decision making process;
  • Apply to suitable funding bodies, and hopefully be successful;
  • With volunteers and contractors undertake the chosen improvement works;
  • Maintain a link between the Ryde Area Ranger project, the ‘improved site’ and its local community to help maintain its integrity.

Funding the Ryde Area Ranger


Single Regeneration Budget monies were allocated by SEEDA to the Isle of Wight Economic Partnership (IWEP) to fund this project until 2006. The project required no financial support from the IWC.
